THIS IS A SCAM!!!
They email back every actor with a song-and-dance about how great they are and how they're so very hired, then immediately prime the pump for a money phishing scheme.
DO NOT ENGAGE.
Thank you to the amazing eagle-eyed actors who smelled the lie and alerted me. I humbly apologize for letting this one get through our defenses. I already flagged this listing on our Friendly Filmmaker community, and will put this listing on a block list going forward.
Best Practices
Since we're here, let's talk about how to keep yourself safe from scammers like this one.
A real audition contact person (be it the director or a casting agent) will always present themselves professionally, with links and references, and prepare an actor for auditioning for a new project. They will send Sides, audition guidelines, deadlines, answer specific questions, and be generally focused on the film itself.
- They will NOT immediately hire you from one reel or self-tape, especially since your reel has nothing to do with any new actual script.
- If anyone starts asking you for a mountain of personal data without offering you theirs, run the other way.
- If you google/research the name of the Casting person and come up with nothing, that's another alarm.
- If they start offering you money immediately, and even start describing installments, before you've seen Sides, that's another huge red flag.
- If you leave comments or email specific questions about the project itself and they respond in vague affirmations without actually showing evidence of a real project being made, that's another red flag.
If you have suspicions, run a search on the project and the creators. If you can't find any existing prior work, or any announcements of the current project, run the other way.
Ultimately, trust your gut, like the amazing actors who raised the alarm here.
Again, thank you to everyone who contacted me about this.
Rest assured, Alaska (our community manager) and I are raising up more barriers to preserve the integrity of our listings and the safety of our community. A.I. is only getting more savvy, but we are on our guard. This is just another moment where we are thankful for our HUMAN friends and filmmaking community. :-)
Stay safe out there!
